About

Compared with LEGO bricks on top.
BYGGIS was a Swedish LEGO clone brand made by Per-Erik Johansson. It started out in the middle of the 1980's and continued until the 2000's.
The first version of the bricks were with tubes just like LEGO bricks, and even with slots for windows and doors like LEGO in the early 50's. Later the slots were removed. In the early 1990's BYGGIS recieved licenses for themes like Super Mario, The Flintstones and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The figures were simply pieces of paper which could be slid into the bricks and moved around. However they did beat LEGO to it, who recieved the first licensed theme - Star Wars, in 1999.
Here are some pictures of various BYGGIS bricks and other parts:

The flat windows and doors can look very similar to LEGO, but there are enough differences to make seperating them possible. First off the plastic used is duller in colour and less translucent than most of the LEGO windows and doors. It also seems like white was the only colour used by BYGGIS. The easiest way to spot the difference is the size. Compared with LEGO they are slightly smaller in width and height. The "edges" meant to slide into the slots of the bricks are also significantly thinner than LEGO. This makes them very loose and fit poorly with LEGO slotted bricks.
